Social media has so many pros and cons. But everyone can agree that it can get annoying sometimes. As self-publishing or indie authors, we all have to make social media decisions. Which platforms are you going to post on? What are you going to post and how often? We have to balance everything else going on with our lives as well as writing time and social media time. We also go through periods where we get frustrated at the amount of time social media takes to do. This is why I decided not to bother building an account on Instagram for the third time. Instead, I decided to focus on my Facebook page and fan group and my weekly blog posts here.

I thought I was done with social media decisions. This might not be the case anymore. I very recently joined another self-marketing group on Facebook. One of the biggest sites mentioned is TikTok. I’ve never had an account and didn’t want to have to learn a new one. I feel like I lost time trying to get Instagram to cooperate with me only for them to delete my account. But from the look of all these posts, I may need to reconsider. Apparently, booktok is huge and many fellow indie authors have connected with more readers this way.

TikTok doesn’t seem to be as strict as Instagram and Amazon. However, accounts with too much “sexy book talk” have been banned. This includes posting tons of videos with graphic scenes even if words are changed, commenting with changed words, and tons of risqué book covers. Reader accounts as well my dudes so be careful! So if I do end up making a TikTok account, I have decided to only showcase funny quotes. I will keep spicy teasers on Facebook groups, my page and profile, and my fan group. Now I just have to decide whether or not I’ll make a TikTok account.
